Building Cardify: business cards for a whole team in Oman

Ali Adnan Haider Darwish · · 3 min

Cardify is a business card platform that BHD Group built in Muscat. It gives every employee in a company a bilingual digital card and a printed card from one approved design. Each card carries a QR code, an Apple Wallet and Google Wallet pass, and scan analytics.

Why we built it

BHD Group started with BHD Printing & Designing, a commercial printer in Muscat. Business cards are a daily job in a print shop. We saw the same problems again and again.

The first problem is language. Most cards in the Gulf are English cards with some Arabic added. Names get transliterated badly. Layouts get mirrored the wrong way. Phone numbers come out reversed. A card in Oman must work in Arabic and English, and each side must be correct.

The second problem is scale. A company does not order one card. It orders cards for a whole team. Someone must collect every name, title and phone number, then check each card by hand. When one person changes role, the cycle starts again.

The third problem is the printed card itself. Once you hand it over, you cannot change it. You also cannot see if anyone used it.

We had the print shop. We had the software team. So we built the digital side next to the printing, and kept both in one place.

What Cardify does

The idea is simple: approve one design, upload the team, and every employee gets a card.

One design for the whole roster. An admin builds one template with the company brand. Then they upload the team list from Excel or paste it from HR. Cardify makes a card for each person with their own details. A company can also give each department its own template.

Arabic and English by default. Every card has an English side and an Arabic side. The Arabic side uses a correct right-to-left layout. You can design and preview both languages free before you print anything.

A QR code on every card. Each card carries a QR code that you can track. You see when and where people scan the card. The QR code opens the digital card, and the contact saves to the phone.

Wallet passes. Each card also issues a real Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass. The receiver does not need to install an app. There is also an NFC tap card with a QR code as a fallback.

An employee portal. Staff update their own details through a branded portal. The admin stays in control of the design. So each person keeps their own details current.

Printing in Oman. The company can order printed cards from verified print shops in Oman. BHD prints in Ghala, Muscat. Standard cards start at OMR 5.000 per 100 cards. You see the price before you confirm.

The web platform is free. There is no subscription and no setup fee. A company pays only when it orders prints.

What I learned building it

A digital card on its own is a weak product. In my experience, most people still want paper in a meeting. A printed card on its own goes out of date. The value is in joining the two. The paper card and the digital card should come from the same record.

The second lesson is about Arabic. You cannot add Arabic at the end. We built the card with both languages from the first day, and that choice shaped every screen.

The third lesson is about who the customer is. One person rarely buys a business card. A company buys cards for its people. So we built Cardify for the admin who manages fifty or five hundred cards.

Cardify now runs as one of the companies in BHD Group, next to the print shop that started it. It shows how I like to build. Start from a real job we already do. Then use software to remove the slow parts.
