What running a print shop in Muscat teaches about business

Ali Adnan Haider Darwish · · 2 min

BHD Printing & Designing was the first company in BHD Group. We print business cards, certificates, packaging, paper cups and much more for companies in Oman. A print shop looks simple from the outside. From the inside it is a fast school in business. It also turned us into a software company: we built the tools we needed, then offered them to others.

Here are the lessons I would give anyone starting a business in Oman, learned at the print shop.

Every order has a date, and the date is the product

A customer who orders certificates for a ceremony does not want certificates. They want certificates on the day of the ceremony. One day late and the order has no value.

So we plan backwards from the date. When does the file need approval? When does the paper arrive? When does the machine run? If any step is at risk, we tell the customer early, not on the morning of the event.

Approve the proof, every time

Most printing problems are not machine problems. They are a wrong phone number, an old logo, or a name spelled two ways. A signed proof before printing saves money and friendships. We do not print without it.

Cash flow is the real business

A print order often needs paper, ink and outsourced work paid before the customer pays. A few large orders can empty the bank account even when the business is profitable on paper. Watch cash weekly. Ask for a deposit on large orders. Invoice the same day the work is delivered.

Suppliers are partners

Paper, cups and special finishes often come from abroad. A good supplier who answers fast and ships on time is worth more than a cheap one who does not. Build a few long relationships, and pay them on time. They remember.

Make the boring parts digital

The print floor runs on many small steps: quote, approval, production, delivery, invoice. We moved each step into our own ERP, with a production board that shows every job and its stage. Now a customer can get a quote, approve it and pay online, and the team sees the job the moment it is approved.

Small details are the brand

A business card is often the first thing a client touches from a company. Paper weight, colour accuracy and clean cutting say more than any slogan. In printing, the customer holds the quality in their hand.
